Woohoo! Never thought GP would be such an enjoyable block. And now I'm torn between choosing Psychiatry or GP as my best block so far. But it was definitely a great 4 weeks with great teachers, friendly people, and a much needed break away from hospital. Somehow everyone in GP setting are chilled out but yet superbly efficient at the same time. Few things from my GP:
1. Coffee time simply means coffee time. A 1 and half hour lunch simply means that. If you're in Ninewells, coffee time means....wait.....what coffee time??
2. Everyone in the GP puts quite a lot of attention and trust on the medic student attached to them (in this case, none other than yours sincerely). They have your timetable pasted everywhere, they have a special slot for you on their computers, they trust you to give immunisation jabs to babies! muahaha...not a problem there for me. but hey, i've learnt to really love kids. no really...i do. especially when they open their eyes in their little moses basket and smile at you and chuckle! wow, nothing beats that when you're having a long day. but of course, once you've jabbed them, it's a different story. man, i'm gonna miss those baby clinics...
3. GPs here are not like GPs in M'sia. you don't just sit in a clinic and wait for pts to come. you have house visits...which for me equates to cruising around in the GP's car, going to places i never knew existed in Dundee and seeing wee old cute ppl sitting comfortably in their cosy arm chairs at home. Really liked those sessions.
4. Drug rep lunches! hmmm....but i'll always feel quite embarassed to take the food laid out in the coffee room. somehow you feel as if you're not really entitled to it. yea, i function quite differently fr Woei Lin...
5. Own consultations!! Haha. was quite jittery during the first one...but by the time i did the last one on the last day, i knew i was gonna miss it. somehow it was just so fun, maybe coz you get to act macam u're already a GP. but of coz there's also the stress factor of getting all the history right and hoping tt the pt doesn't suddenly come up with something new when you call the GP in after you've seen the pt. and also having to reach the diagnosis and coming up with a managment plan.
6. GPs here are highly, highly, qualified SPECIALISED doctors. yes, Malaysian people, GPs are specialists here. and they really know their stuff.
7. "You did very well. You are scheduled for a half day off today? A well-deserved one it is."
And now a one week Easter break!
2 comic books, the complete works of Oscar Wilde, 2 story books, half a season of House and a whole DVD box set of Scrubs Season 2...ah...it'll be a nice holiday.
mmm, wait, i think I'm supposed to be doing something else...
oh yea, complete my ROA, brush up my patient presentations, finalise 4th yr project, go back to Ninewells in search for signatures, study...
ok...maybe not that nice after all.
